Imagine never having to create another user login again. Never having to reset another password. If the frustration of private keys and seed phrases went away.

Since Stych’s founding, our core mission has been to eliminate friction from the internet, and authentication remains one of the biggest points of friction on the modern web. Over the past two years, Stytch has been building out the authentication platform for developers, making it easy and seamless to integrate passwordless authentication into websites and applications.

Today we’re proud to launch our first consumer-facing authentication solution: Vessel, powered by Stytch.

Your passport for the internet

Forget about remembering hundreds of passwords, seed phrases and creating siloed, disparate accounts as you travel Web2 and Web3. Vessel allows you to create a singular account and wallet that travels with you and gives you 1-click entry to connected sites.

Technically speaking, Vessel is a fully non-custodial, multi-chain crypto wallet and identity vault. In plainer terms, you can think of Vessel as your digital wallet and your digital identity rolled into one. It’s a single, portable identity and account that travels with you online and opens access to Web2 and Web3. A tool that allows you to manage your online identity in one place, have control over what data you share, and the power to revoke access to it at any time and from one central location. That’s the vision behind Vessel.

To create Vessel, we combined the best of Web2 authentication innovations to simplify account creation and data provisioning with the power of Web3 wallet architectures to condense authentication, identity (e.g. NFTs), and payments into a single secure browser extension. In doing so, we’ve built much more than a Web3 wallet—we’ve built a passport for the internet.

Connect safely and seamlessly

For Web2 user experiences, Vessel removes the need to create passwords for every site you visit or verify your email + phone number for every account you sign up for. Vessel helps you explore the internet through connected sites (sites that are enabled to detect the Vessel browser extension). You always have control over what sites you add to your connected site list and you can always add or remove sites.

Once you download the Vessel browser extension, a private Web3 ID is created that allows you to be anonymously authenticated as you land on connected sites. With your anonymous Web3 ID, you have the ability to manage both your Web2 digital identity (today, that’s your verified email and phone number) and your crypto wallets. You’re also in complete control of your data and can choose to share it, or not, with sites you trust that require this data.

Crypto made accessible

Creating a crypto wallet requires you to create a private key. The typical way this private key is derived today is that a wallet presents users with a seed phrase, a collection of 12-24 words, that you must remember or else your account is lost forever, adding stress to an already new and confusing authentication experience.

To enable a simpler onboarding to Web3, Vessel is a fully non-custodial wallet (meaning a wallet controlled by you rather than a third party) that eliminates the need for seed phrases. Vessel currently supports both Ethereum and Solana, allowing you to explore and use apps in both of these rich Web3 ecosystems.

Vessel uses common Web2 patterns (a password & a PIN), in lieu of seed phrases, to generate a non-custodial private key, so you can manage your crypto assets without headache. Under the hood, Vessel introduces new security approaches to make this type of Web2 simplicity possible––incorporating data from public data breaches and running the Vessel account credentials through 3 million rounds of computationally expensive PBKDF2 cryptographic hashing, we provide significant security while simplifying the Web3 wallet onboarding experience.
